According to a research company, data communication product revenue in the fourth quarter of 2023 hit a new record. With a year-on-year growth of 11%, module shipments will grow rapidly in the second half of 2023. But the telecommunications market remains in the doldrums.
According to the latest (4Q23 Optical Components Report) from the research company:
With the explosive growth in demand for optical products for artificial intelligence cluster applications. Data communication optical component revenue has grown for the fourth consecutive quarter. Optical Communications leads the way in shipments of 800GbE data communications modules for ultra-large-scale artificial intelligence applications.

According to the research firm’s lead analyst for optical components:
“Shipments of datacom products – especially 800GbE optical products – are growing rapidly”
“Shipments are expected to reach 8 million in 2024.”
"The telecom sector is currently recovering slowly after hitting bottom in the third quarter of 2023. But there will be no reversal in the short term."
More key findings from the 2023 Q4 Optical Components Report:
Data communications product revenue reaches record levels as demand for artificial intelligence accelerates.
However, due to poor performance at the beginning of the year. Total revenue from data communication products fell by 4% throughout 2023.
After a sharp decline in early 2023, 400GbE port shipments recovered. And in the fourth quarter of 2023, it increased by more than 50% year-on-year.
In 2025, the high-speed data communication optical device market is expected to exceed US$10 billion.
Coherent port shipments increased sequentially in the quarter but declined slightly year-over-year.
Based on accelerated demand, the research firm raised its forecast for 800GbE modules by 8% in 2024. And preliminary forecasts for 1600ZR modules have also been added to this quarter’s optical device report.
