A group predicts that shipments of coherent optical transceivers will increase by 17% each year for the next five years. Most of this growth will be driven by routers and switches.

The group's latest report predicts a 17% annual increase in global coherent optical transceiver shipments for the next five years. The coherent optics market is changing with the introduction of small form factor pluggable optics. This will make coherent technology more popular in routers and Ethernet switches.
"Demand for coherent technology is expanding," said the group's vice president of market research for optical transmission. The market needs improved, energy-efficient, high-capacity transceivers to meet future global network demands.
In the past, DWDM systems primarily used optical technologies. The group's VP of market research for Ethernet switches provided this information. "Nonetheless, as suppliers have made progress in creating more compact, energy-saving coherent transceivers, their utilization is growing swiftly. This expansion includes more platforms and applications they can support and cater for.
Other highlights of the report:
The market for coherent optics is projected to hit $13 billion by the year 2027. This growth will be driven by two packages: module/embedded and pluggable. Plug-in transceivers will grow the most and make up most of the sales growth in the next five years.
